Honoring an ancient Celtic tradition, a handfasting ceremony is almost like a "promise to be engaged" declaration. You are acknowledging your engagement for a year and a day.  After that point, the couple reunites with the priest to choose to be married, or think that they are not a good match, and best to find a more suitable lifelong partner.
